SNOW COLLEGE –– PRESS RELEASE – SEPT 1979

NANCY WEIR – FIRST FEMALE FOOTBALL TRAINER IN UTAH

RELEASED TO: GENERAL
by: Roger G. Baker, Assistant to the President – Snow College, Ephraim, UT 84627 – Phone: 283-4021

An outstanding first in the history of Utah Colleges has been quietly taking place on the sidelines of all football scrimmages and games of Snow College. The first is NANCY WEIR, a 1979 graduate of the University of Utah with a degree in P. E. and a specialized athletic training certificate, who is the trainer for the Snow College Badger Football team.

“I like both medicine and athletics,” Nancy said, “and this is a way to combine them.”

It is also quite evident that Nancy likes the Badgers, and easy comradery that takes place at taping prior to games in the trainer’s room of Badger Stadium is ample demonstration that the Badgers like Nancy.

When Nancy hurries onto the field to make an evaluation of a Badger injury, the respect for her judgement by players and coaches attests to the fact Nancy has proven herself in this largely male-dominated activity.

Nancy comes well prepared in her field. She has a B. S. Degree and more than 1,800 hours of internship at the University of Utah where she was associated with the Indoor Track and Women’s Softball programs.

When January comes, Nancy will take her test in California and return as a Certified National Athletic Trainer with the capabilities of training and certifying apprentice trainers. Nancy is also a certified First Aid Instructor, a Water Safety Instructor, and a CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation).

“Why do you like your job?”, I asked a smiling, relaxed young lady who was smoothing strips of tape around a weak ankle of a 230 pound six-foot lineman.

“They treat me like a queen,” she answered softly. “I am present at the workouts; I go on the athletic bus; I evaluate the needs and refer critical cases to an orthopedic surgeon or doctor specializing in sports medicine. I handle the less critical cases within established guidelines.”

“What is your biggest challenge?” I question.

“It is a little scary to be in this position of responsibility. The team has faith in me and they trust me to make the right decision. Sometimes it means that a team member cannot go back into the game, but they have all been super.”

“What about the daily decisions?” I prod

“I do preventive taping for scrimmage; I tape several ankles, a couple of knees and a lot of hands and thumbs,” she said as her hands deftly apply layer on layer of tape. “And, then,” she continued, “there is always the injury taping, the rehabilitating prescriptions of weights, ice, heat or whirlpool and then checking to see that the individualized program is followed through to healing.”

Nancy is an alumnus of Snow College. She played volleyball and softball on Ann Bricker’s women’s teams; she fulfilled an LDS Mission to Colorado – Denver; then she returned to the University of Utah.

Nancy’s home is in Ogden where her father, Blaine, operates a machine shop and her mother is the secretary in the family business. There are two boys and three girls in the family.
